Andhra Pradesh Tackles Student Health Crisis in Hostels

The Andhra Pradesh government has directed all District Collectors to establish Joint Action Committees (JACs) comprising officials from nine departments. These committees are tasked with inspecting educational institutes and welfare hostels to prevent students from falling ill. The directives, issued on January 20, 2026, stem from the recommendations of a state Task Force formed in December to enhance infectious disease prevention measures.
The JACs will conduct scheduled and surprise inspections, scrutinizing hostel conditions, including toilets, drainage, and water storage. They will also verify the availability of medical supplies, monitor for outbreaks like diarrhea, and ensure anemia is addressed. Measures against mosquito breeding, rat infestation, and the presence of snakes and dogs will be assessed.
Furthermore, the committees will investigate water quality for cooking and cleaning, as well as kitchen hygiene and food storage practices. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has expressed a strong commitment to maintaining hygiene in government schools and hostels. The Health Minister emphasized that the JACs' role extends beyond reporting, requiring decisive action to implement changes and safeguard student health.
