Ant Invasion Shuts Down Chhattisgarh Hospital OTs

Heavy monsoon rains have created an unusual healthcare crisis in Chhattisgarh's Durg district. Swarms of winged ants have infiltrated the operation theatres at the district hospital's mother and child unit, leading to a temporary halt in surgical procedures.

Authorities reported that the two dedicated operation theatres have been closed for several days. Cracks in the walls and damaged floor tiles, exacerbated by continuous rainfall, provided an entry point for the insects. This situation has raised significant concerns regarding patient safety and the risk of infection within the sterile surgical environment.

The closure has had a notable impact on Caesarean section procedures. Although emergency C-sections are still being performed in the main emergency operation theatre, all elective surgeries have been postponed or redirected to other facilities. This has caused considerable inconvenience for expectant mothers and their families.

The mother and child unit typically performs four to five surgeries daily. The closure of its specialized operating rooms has increased the workload on the emergency theatre. As a precautionary measure prioritizing patient well-being, Civil Surgeon Dr. Ashish Minj confirmed the decision to close the OTs. Repair work, fumigation, and pest control measures have concluded.

The operation theatres will only be permitted to reopen once microbiological culture reports definitively confirm that the premises are free of contamination and adhere to all necessary sterility standards. This ensures patient safety remains paramount throughout the recovery process.
