AP launches free advanced cancer genetic testing

Andhra Pradesh is set to launch advanced genetic testing for cancer patients, a service previously unavailable within the state and free of charge. A new laboratory, costing ₹2.5 crore and spread over 2,000 sq ft, has been established at the NATCO Cancer Centre, located within the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Guntur. Health Minister Satyakumar Yadav was scheduled to inaugurate this facility on September 22.

This pioneering project is a joint effort by the Andhra Pradesh government, AstraZeneca, and Strand Life Sciences. The laboratory will analyze patient samples to identify specific genetic mutations in cancer cells. This information will guide doctors in selecting the most effective treatments tailored to the individual genetic makeup of the tumor, from initial diagnosis through to ongoing monitoring.

Previously, patients had to send samples to cities like Bengaluru and Mumbai for molecular mutation testing. The Guntur facility will eliminate this necessity, providing accessible, advanced genetic testing locally. Initially, the lab will handle approximately 2,000 samples over two years, with 1,000 each for breast and lung cancer patients. AstraZeneca will cover the costs associated with these tests.

The laboratory will investigate critical genetic alterations such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 for breast cancer, and EGFR, KRAS, NRAS, and BRAF for lung cancer, aiding in the identification of suitable targeted medicines. Future plans include a full-scale genetic testing center in Amaravati Quantum Valley, integrated with a state-level genetic information system, and the development of AI-driven tools for personalized medicine and drug discovery.
