A key development was a recent three-day workshop in Vijayawada. Organized by the State Health Department, it received support from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
This workshop convened officials from Health, Animal Husbandry, Forests, Environment, Agriculture, and Fisheries departments. Medical and veterinary experts also participated, reviewing an initial list of 45 diseases. These include diseases like scrub typhus, anthrax, COVID-19, and rabies, all posing significant public health risks.
Participants discussed enhancing surveillance systems for both humans and animals, improving laboratory diagnostic capacities, and strengthening inter-departmental coordination. Training for medical and veterinary personnel and increasing community awareness were also highlighted as crucial steps.
The ultimate goal of this initiative is to finalize a priority list of zoonotic diseases and develop comprehensive recommendations. These will inform the State's action plan for prevention, surveillance, laboratory testing, and response strategies.
