Ambulance Birth: Mum & Baby Safe After Hospital Care Unavailable
30 Oct
Summary
- A woman delivered her baby in an ambulance on the A96 road.
- Local hospital's maternity services were downgraded, forcing travel.
- Delayed restoration of full maternity services causes concern.
A woman delivered her baby boy, Braeson, in an ambulance on the A96 road after being advised that her local hospital, Dr Gray's in Elgin, could not provide the specialist care she required. Hannah Smith, 39, had to travel to Aberdeen Maternity Hospital because Dr Gray's consultant-led maternity services have been downgraded since 2018. Her labour progressed too quickly, resulting in an unexpected ambulance birth near a farm track off the A96.
Smith, who had previously undergone an emergency Caesarean, was advised to deliver at a hospital with full consultant services due to her age and IVF pregnancy. She expressed concern that if she had been able to go to Dr Gray's, she would have reached the hospital before the birth. This is at least the third such incident on the A96 since 2018, emphasizing ongoing issues with rural maternity care.
The restoration of full maternity services at Dr Gray's Hospital, originally planned for the end of this year, has been delayed until sometime next year. NHS Grampian apologized for the poor experience and reaffirmed its commitment to restoring services as soon as safely possible. However, they noted that for some women, specialist care in Aberdeen remains the safest option.
A nationwide review of Scotland's maternity services, focusing on rural and island communities, is currently underway and expected to submit its findings in July next year. This review includes specific attention to services in Elgin.
