Doctors to Guide Vaccines Independently?
14 Feb
Summary
- AMA initiates independent vaccine review for 2026-27 season.
- New process aims for transparent, evidence-based vaccine recommendations.
- Federal regulators still hold final say on vaccine approval.

Physicians may soon receive vaccine recommendations from independent scientific bodies, rather than solely relying on federal government guidance. The American Medical Association (AMA), the largest physicians' organization in the U.S., has initiated its own evidence-based review process for vaccine safety and effectiveness, beginning with the 2026-27 respiratory virus season. This new approach, conducted in partnership with the Vaccine Integrity Project, seeks to establish a transparent system for vaccine recommendations.
Federal regulators, including the FDA, will continue to determine if vaccines are safe and effective for use. However, the AMA's initiative aims to supplement this by providing independent medical advice. This move follows recent controversial recommendations from the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), which have prompted concerns about declining confidence in public health guidance and potential increases in preventable illnesses. The AMA's review will analyze vaccine risks and benefits for all demographics, including children and pregnant women, providing data to medical organizations to develop guidance for vaccination decisions.
