Europe's First Alzheimer's Prevention Drug Trial Begins
5 Sep
Summary
- A UK NHS trust is the first in Europe to trial a new Alzheimer's drug.
- The drug Trontinemab targets beta-amyloid buildup in the brain.
- The trial aims to prevent or delay Alzheimer's before symptoms appear.
Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first in Europe to participate in a groundbreaking clinical trial for Trontinemab. This investigational drug is being evaluated for its potential to delay or prevent the onset of Alzheimer's disease.
The trial focuses on intervening at an earlier stage, aiming to act before symptoms of Alzheimer's disease begin to develop. Researchers will identify eligible participants using blood tests to pinpoint those most likely to benefit from the treatment. This marks a shift from previous research that often focused on treating the disease after its symptoms had already emerged.
This international clinical trial, with the trust as the third site worldwide and the first in Europe, is recruiting 1,600 healthy adults aged between 55 and 80. Participants will be drawn from anywhere in the UK, expanding the reach of this crucial research. The drug Trontinemab works by targeting beta-amyloid, a protein that accumulates in the brain and is associated with Alzheimer's disease.
