Anne Sutton, a 61-year-old retired police officer, experienced a life-threatening cardiac arrest while tending her allotment in East Leake, Nottinghamshire, on January 26, 2026. She was with her husband, Peter Sutton, when she suddenly felt unwell and collapsed.
Fortunately, neighbours James and Adele Lapworth, an off-duty nurse, were nearby and immediately began performing CPR. Their crucial intervention continued until the East Midlands Ambulance Service arrived and transported Anne to the hospital. The quick actions of the bystanders and the prompt arrival of emergency services were vital in saving her life.
Reflecting on the event, Anne expressed profound gratitude, stating that "just saying thank you doesn't seem enough." She highlighted that her near-fatal experience was unexpected, given her active lifestyle. As a result of the incident, a defibrillator has now been installed at a public point on the allotment site, providing a critical resource for future emergencies.
