- Diner suffered severe, life-threatening anaphylaxis after dessert.
- Restaurant staff repeatedly assured no peanuts were in the dessert.
- Two EpiPens and ambulance treatment were needed to stabilize him.

A 20-year-old man's birthday celebration in Valletta, Malta, rapidly escalated into a life-threatening medical emergency due to a severe peanut allergy. Ellis Edwards, who is usually meticulous about managing his allergy, was assured by restaurant staff that a suggested Oreo dessert was safe and contained no peanuts, only hazelnuts.
Shortly after consuming the dessert on April 30, Edwards began experiencing symptoms like tingling lips and mild breathing difficulties. His condition dramatically worsened within minutes, leading to significant swelling and severe respiratory distress, indicative of anaphylaxis.
Edwards administered two EpiPens, but his symptoms continued to deteriorate. Paramedics arrived and provided further treatment, including epinephrine and oxygen, before transporting him to a hospital. He remained hospitalized until May 2.
The terrifying ordeal has profoundly impacted Edwards, causing him to become more anxious about dining out and lose trust in allergen information provided by establishments. He hopes sharing his experience, documented on TikTok, will highlight the serious consequences of food allergy miscommunication.
