Alberta Paramedic Rebrand Scrapped by Minister
11 Jun
Summary
- Minister LaGrange reversed the rebranding of Alberta's paramedic service.
- The proposed name change to ALTA Paramedic Health has been halted.
- Less than $25,000 was spent on prototype development for the rebrand.
Alberta's Hospitals Minister Adriana LaGrange has intervened to stop a contentious rebranding initiative for the province's paramedic service provider. The decision means Emergency Health Services Alberta will revert to its original name, EHS Alberta, halting the planned transition to ALTA Paramedic Health.
The rebranding, announced last month, had proposed outfitting ambulances with new logos and issuing new uniforms to paramedics. The provincial government initially stated the change signaled a renewed commitment to high-quality care and accountability.
However, critics, including the union representing approximately 3,500 paramedics, voiced strong opposition, labeling the rebrand a wasteful expenditure. They argued funds should instead address critical issues like working conditions and staff shortages.
Minister LaGrange confirmed her agreement with these concerns, ordering the rebrand's cessation pending further engagement. She clarified that no operational funding was utilized, with less than $25,000 spent on prototype development. No further changes to assets like uniforms or ambulances had been made.
The Health Sciences Association of Alberta welcomed the minister's decision, expressing appreciation for the government listening to their members' feedback. The union emphasized the importance of focusing resources on strengthening emergency care and supporting professional recruitment and retention.
