Experts Warn: 61.5% of Weekly Grocery Basket is Ultra-Processed
16 Nov
Summary
- 61.5% of average weekly shopping basket is ultra-processed foods
- Linked to weight gain, obesity, and increased risk of diseases
- Experts recommend 80% of diet should be whole or minimally processed

According to a recent investigation, the average UK household's weekly grocery basket is alarmingly dominated by ultra-processed foods, which now make up 61.5% of purchases. These industrially produced foods, often packed with artificial ingredients, salt, fat, and sugar, have become the backbone of many British diets.
This concerning trend has serious health implications. Numerous studies have found links between high consumption of ultra-processed foods and a range of issues, from weight gain and obesity to inflammatory bowel disease, type 2 diabetes, and even certain cancers. Just last week, a study found that women under 50 who ate the most ultra-processed foods were 45% more likely to develop bowel polyps, which can lead to cancer.
Experts are urging the public to be more mindful of their food choices. They recommend that around 80% of one's diet should come from whole or minimally processed foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. The remaining 20% can include some ultra-processed items, but these should be consumed in moderation. Making healthier swaps, like choosing plain dark chocolate over sugary candy bars, can go a long way in improving overall dietary quality.
