New research indicates that exposure to a combination of air pollutants during early pregnancy stages significantly increases the risk of preterm birth. A study conducted in Utah, which has experienced periods of severe air quality, found that expectant mothers exposed to mixtures of pollutants faced nearly triple the odds of delivering prematurely.
The late first trimester emerged as a particularly vulnerable period. Exposure to a mix of ozone and fine particulate matter during this time showed the strongest association with preterm birth. Researchers suggest this is because crucial developments of the placenta and arteries supplying the fetus with oxygen and blood occur then, and pollutants can impair this process.
This finding raises concerns about the current air quality index (AQI) ratings, which typically assess individual pollutants. The study's authors suggest that these ratings might not fully capture the health risks posed by the cumulative exposure to multiple pollutants simultaneously. Such combined exposures could lead to inflammation and accumulated damage over time, further elevating the risk of complications requiring preterm delivery.
