Pollution Spike: Kids' OPD Visits Soar 40%
11 Feb
Summary
- Pediatric OPD visits for respiratory issues rose 20-30% yearly due to pollution.
- Infants and toddlers aged 0-3 are most vulnerable to air pollution's effects.
- Parents can protect children by avoiding outdoor activities during peak pollution.

As Delhi's air quality remains poor to severe, pediatric outpatient department (OPD) visits for respiratory and allergy-related complaints have seen a substantial increase. This year and last year, footfall typically rose by 20-30%, with a noticeable surge in the evenings when symptoms tend to worsen.
This surge translates to a 30-40% increase in OPD visits directly or indirectly linked to pollution. Infants and toddlers aged 0-3 are most vulnerable due to their immature lungs and narrow airways. Children aged 4-10 are also affected due to increased outdoor exposure for school and sports.
Warning signs include persistent cough, nasal congestion without fever, and breathlessness. Parents can mitigate risks by limiting outdoor activities during high pollution, using air purifiers, and ensuring mask usage for those aged six and above when outdoors. Maintaining hydration and a balanced diet is also crucial. Children with asthma or allergies must continue prescribed inhaler use.
