9 Apr
Summary
- AIIMS-Patna successfully performed a complex limb salvage procedure.
- The patient, diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, avoided amputation.
- The patient regained mobility and was discharged within three weeks.

AIIMS-Patna recently executed a highly specialized limb salvage operation, successfully preserving the leg of a 25-year-old patient diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma. The patient, Makar Dhwaj from Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, initially sought treatment for what was thought to be a fracture but was later found to have this aggressive bone cancer.
A multidisciplinary tumour board at AIIMS-Patna devised a limb salvage plan instead of opting for conventional amputation. The patient underwent chemotherapy from August 2025 to January 2026, which significantly reduced the tumour. This was followed by a complex surgery on March 13, 2026, where surgeons used titanium plates and muscle flap reconstruction to restore the leg's stability and function.
The patient's recovery has been swift and encouraging. He began physiotherapy on the second day post-surgery and was discharged within three weeks, stable and able to walk with support. This achievement underscores the effectiveness of early diagnosis, collaborative teamwork, and advanced surgical techniques in modern cancer care.
