AIIMS Patna: First Bone Conduction Surgery on Anotia Child
2 Nov
Summary
- AIIMS Patna successfully performed first bone conduction implant.
- The surgery was for a child with bilateral anotia, a rare condition.
- AIIMS Patna's hearing implant program surpassed 400 procedures.
Doctors at AIIMS-Patna recently performed the first-ever bone conduction implant surgery on a child born with bilateral anotia, a rare congenital condition where both external ears are absent. This significant procedure was carried out under the central government's Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) program.
On the same day, the ENT department also successfully conducted two cochlear implant surgeries, one on a child and another on an adult. These three advanced hearing implant procedures collectively helped the institute's hearing implant program surpass the milestone of 400 implants. The surgeries took place on October 30.
A bone conduction implant assists individuals with hearing loss originating from outer or middle ear issues by directly transmitting sound vibrations through the skull to the inner ear. Cochlear implants, conversely, transform sound into electrical signals for the auditory nerve, aiding those with severe hearing loss.
The ENT department also hosted a continuing medical education program focused on 'hearing solutions,' featuring discussions on advanced hearing technologies and implant-based treatments by leading experts.
