AIIMS: Hope's Underpass, Despair's Waiting Room

Families like Tanvi's from Rajasthan, who faced a tragic loss despite seeking treatment for a congenital heart defect, highlight the complex realities of long-term care. Other patients, such as Naushad Khan's son with a brain tumor from Uttar Pradesh, endured year-long waits for surgery. Sangeeta Devi from Bihar also experienced repeated delays in securing dates for her son's treatment. These accounts underscore the significant challenges, including prolonged waiting times and the strain of frequent travel between villages and the hospital, that accompany seeking care at AIIMS.

For those battling life-threatening illnesses like cancer, the uncertainty is amplified. A sixteen-year-old from Jharkhand, diagnosed with blood cancer, and a boy from Aligarh, also suffering from the same disease, represent just some of the individuals whose families face extreme difficulties. They often live in the hospital's verandahs or public pathways, struggling with basic amenities while awaiting diagnoses and treatments that are free but time-consuming. The immense cost of private treatment makes AIIMS their sole option, despite the arduous conditions and lengthy waits.
