Summary
- Health Minister visited Japan to secure delayed AIIMS Madurai funds.
- JICA has now disbursed funds, enabling construction to commence.
- AIIMS Madurai is expected to be completed by 2028.

Following a directive from Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Health Minister Ma Subramanian traveled to Japan with state health officials to meet with representatives of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The purpose of the visit was to address the delay in funding for the construction of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai.
During the visit, the delegation urged JICA officials to expedite the release of funds. This intervention proved successful, leading to the disbursement of the long-pending funds and the subsequent commencement of construction work on the AIIMS-Madurai campus. The project was officially notified in the central gazette on July 3, 2020.
Despite the recent progress, AIIMS-Madurai is not nearing immediate completion. While one block has been constructed, the facility has been admitting 50 MBBS students annually since four years ago, with classes temporarily held at the Ramanathapuram Government Medical College. JICA has projected that construction will be finalized by 2028.
