In a landmark medical achievement for the state, plastic surgeons at AIIMS-Mangalagiri have successfully re-attached a man's amputated arm. The patient, a 25-year-old mill machine operator from Jharkhand, suffered a severe crush injury to his left arm on February 22 when it became trapped in a tar machine at a worksite near Hanuman Junction.
Brought to AIIMS the same day, the patient was informed of the critical condition and the limited possibility of successful limb replantation. Despite the challenges, the medical team decided to proceed with emergency limb replantation.
Led by Shanthakumar Shivalingappa, a team of surgeons performed an eight-hour-long procedure, meticulously reconstructing major blood vessels, stabilizing the bone, and repairing muscles and soft tissues. Five days post-surgery, a skin graft was successfully applied to cover the arm wound.
The patient remains stable and is recovering in the ward. Secondary procedures, including nerve reconstruction and definitive bone fixation, are scheduled for a later date.
