AIIMS Bathinda is preparing to launch cadaveric organ transplants, aiming to do so within the next 4 to 5 months. This move will establish it as the only government institution in Punjab, Haryana, and adjacent districts of Rajasthan equipped for deceased donor transplants.
Approximately a year after successfully performing its first live renal transplant in March of last year, the institute has since completed nine additional successful kidney transplants. The launch of cadaveric transplants will significantly enhance the hospital's capacity to provide life-saving organ replacements from brain-dead or cardiac-dead donors.
AIIMS Bathinda received its license from the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) in May of last year. The hospital is actively recruiting counselors to facilitate crucial conversations with families of deceased patients regarding organ donation. This expansion is expected to reduce the patient load on facilities like PGIMER in Chandigarh.
