AI Mammogram Tool Predicts Breast Cancer Risk
2 Oct
Summary
- New AI tool assesses single mammogram for future breast cancer risk.
- Tool provides a percentage score for a woman's five-year risk.
- This technology aims to help detect cancers earlier and improve outcomes.

A new artificial intelligence tool, Clairity Breast, is now available nationwide for women to assess their future breast cancer risk. Approved by the FDA last year, the $249 tool uses a single recent mammogram to predict a woman's five-year probability of developing breast cancer. This score, presented as a percentage, is intended to supplement clinical information and aid in earlier cancer detection when treatment is more effective.
The technology analyzes subtle imaging patterns invisible to the human eye, trained on hundreds of thousands of mammograms globally. It classifies risk into average, intermediate, or high categories. While the tool does not detect cancer, a high-risk score may prompt increased screening and interventions. Experts caution against complacency with low scores, emphasizing continued regular screening.
Women eligible for the test must have had a standard screening mammogram within the past 12 months. Results are delivered to patients, who are advised to discuss them with their healthcare providers. This advancement aims to identify more at-risk women, particularly those with no family history of the disease, and potentially reduce the number of cancers falling through the cracks.
