AI Revolutionizes Delhi Hospital X-rays
11 Jan
Summary
- AI tool generates provisional X-ray reports in minutes.
- AI enhances diagnostic accuracy and speeds up patient care.
- AI supports radiologists, not replacing human expertise.

AIIMS in Delhi is integrating an artificial intelligence tool to expedite the reading of chest X-rays, a diagnostic test conducted nearly 1,000 times daily at the institute. This AI software, sourced from a private healthtech startup and FDA-approved, can produce provisional reports within five to ten minutes, a stark improvement over the previous one-to-two-day wait. This advancement is expected to significantly reduce backlogs and allow for quicker identification of potential health issues.
The AI employs deep learning algorithms to detect nodules and early signs of abnormalities in X-ray images. While AIIMS plans to develop its own AI system in the future, the current tool is already improving workflow by easing workload pressure and enhancing diagnostic accuracy. Doctors emphasize that the AI is a supplementary tool, designed to assist rather than replace radiologists. All AI-generated reports undergo rigorous review by a team of radiologists and clinicians before any treatment decisions are made.
