AIIMS has introduced AI-enabled smart glasses designed to significantly improve the quality of life for visually impaired individuals. These advanced devices, developed in collaboration with Rotary District 3012, SHG Technologies, and Vision Aid, translate visual cues into real-time audio guidance. Features include text-to-speech reading, facial and object recognition, obstacle detection, and navigation assistance.
This initiative is part of a larger program targeting nearly 1,500 visually impaired students above Class 5 from Delhi-NCR schools, along with patients from AIIMS's low-vision clinics. The program includes structured user training and ongoing support to ensure effective device utilization. Beneficiaries must have access to a smartphone to utilize the full capabilities of the glasses.
Initially, 53 individuals received these smart glasses in February 2026. Each device carries a cost of approximately ₹35,000 but is currently being provided free of charge under this program. Organizers plan to expand the initiative to reach more beneficiaries across the region, emphasizing how this technology opens new possibilities for education, employment, and daily living.
