Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic and medical knowledge platform OpenEvidence have partnered to deliver AI-powered clinical decision support to physicians, particularly in regions with limited technological access. This collaboration offers a specialized version of OpenEvidence's platform free of charge to healthcare providers in approximately 100 low- and middle-income countries.
The initiative aims to overcome barriers such as limited access to medical literature and specialist expertise, which can impair patient care. While global healthcare systems explore generative AI to address physician shortages, this project focuses on making advanced medical knowledge accessible regardless of geographic location.
OpenEvidence's platform, which provides answers to doctors' questions using peer-reviewed research and treatment guidelines, saw 42 million consultations from US clinicians in August. Anthropic's technology will form the back-end support, with OpenEvidence tailoring the system to specific regional healthcare infrastructure and needs.
Previous work by OpenEvidence with health organizations in Rwanda and Botswana has adapted tools for different disease patterns and diagnostic resources. The system is designed to be context-adaptive, recognizing that many physicians in these regions possess smartphones, enabling access to crucial medical information.
