AI Reveals "Danger Zones" in Women's Cancer Surgery
18 Oct
Summary
- AI identifies "Red Alert Zone" below uterine vessels to prevent organ injury.
- Modified surgical approach reduced blood loss in 105 complex cancer cases.
- New anatomical mapping improves surgical precision and preserves vital structures.
Doctors at AIIMS Delhi have pioneered the identification of critical anatomical "danger zones" to enhance safety in complex oncological surgeries for women. These zones, identified using artificial intelligence and detailed study, pinpoint areas requiring utmost precision to avert complications.
An area below the uterine vessels has been designated "Ray's Zone" or "Red Alert Zone." This region is crucial as it houses the ureter, bladder, pelvic nerves, and major blood vessels. A revised surgical technique focusing on meticulous dissection in this zone was applied to 105 radical hysterectomies, resulting in significantly reduced blood loss and fewer injuries.
Additionally, "Ray's Hepatocaval Triangle" has been defined near the inferior vena cava and hepatic veins. This zone is vital during liver mobilization. By mapping these hazardous areas, surgeons gain clearer reference points, leading to improved precision and better preservation of delicate structures during intricate procedures.
