Summary
- AI can help bridge healthcare access gaps in India.
- India aims to become a global hub for pharmaceutical innovation.
- AI is crucial for understanding complex diseases and diverse genetics.

Union Minister of State for Health, Anupriya Patel, articulated India's vision for leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare and pharmaceuticals during the IIMA Healthcare Summit 2026. She identified significant challenges, such as India's large and diverse population and geographical complexities that hinder healthcare access, positioning AI as a critical "force multiplier" to achieve health equity.
Patel stressed that AI adoption must prioritize improved patient care and access for underserved populations, rather than being solely a technological advancement. The government aims to transition India from being the "pharmacy of the world" to the "laboratory of the world," driving innovation in drug discovery and development.
AI is deemed essential for combating the rising burden of non-communicable and communicable diseases, especially given India's genetic diversity. The PRIP scheme, with a Rs5,000 crore outlay, aims to bolster research and connect educational institutions with industry to foster innovation-led growth.
The minister advocated for safe, responsible, and human-centered AI development that augments healthcare professionals without replacing human accountability. The priority is to scale validated AI tools from pilot phases to national programs, ensuring only the safest and most effective solutions reach patients through collaboration across the AI lifecycle.
