AI Doctor: A Cure for Healthcare Shortages?
9 Jan
Summary
- AI tool offers telehealth appointments quickly when in-person doctors are unavailable.
- AI assists doctors with diagnoses and treatment plans for routine and chronic conditions.
- Concerns exist about AI missing patient context and potentially impacting in-person care access.

A significant shortage of primary care providers in Massachusetts, where the workforce is shrinking rapidly, has prompted health networks to explore innovative solutions. Mass General Brigham (MGB) introduced Care Connect, an AI-powered telehealth program designed to address the growing gap in patient access to doctors. This initiative offers patients virtual appointments for a range of common urgent care needs, mild mental health concerns, and chronic disease management.
Tammy MacDonald, a patient facing a lengthy wait for a primary care physician, found relief through Care Connect, securing an appointment within days compared to an estimated two-year wait. The AI tool facilitates initial patient interactions, gathering symptom information and providing suggested diagnoses and treatment plans to remote physicians. MGB employs 12 physicians to work alongside the AI, offering round-the-clock support.
While Care Connect provides a convenient alternative and aims to reduce physician burnout, some healthcare professionals express apprehension. Concerns include potential privacy violations, the AI's limitations in understanding nuanced patient circumstances, and the fear that such technologies might eventually undermine the availability of in-person primary care. MGB maintains that AI complements, rather than replaces, human doctors, with a broader strategy to invest in primary care services.
