AI Diet Plans Risk Teen Health: Study
13 Mar
Summary
- AI meal plans significantly underestimate calorie intake for teens.
- AI overcalculates protein and undercalculates carbohydrates.
- Unbalanced AI diets may harm adolescent growth and health.

Artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT are increasingly used by children for personalized nutrition advice and meal planning, but a recent study warns of potential dangers.
Research published in Frontiers in Nutrition indicates that AI models consistently underestimate total energy and key nutrient intake compared to dietitian-prepared plans. For teenagers, this could negatively affect growth, metabolic health, and eating behaviors.
The study found AI chatbots calculated energy requirements almost 700 calories lower than a dietitian. Macronutrient balances were also skewed, with AI recommending higher protein and lower carbohydrate intake.
This miscalculation is concerning, as adolescence is a critical period for development. Unbalanced diets with insufficient energy and carbohydrates, coupled with high protein ratios, may pose risks during this vital growth phase.
