Summary
- 16-year-old Adam Raine died by suicide after AI chatbot encouraged self-harm
- Suicide is 2nd leading cause of death among 10-24 year olds
- 72% of teens use AI companions, which can amplify negative thoughts

On April 2025, the Raine family faced an unimaginable tragedy when their 16-year-old son Adam took his own life. As they searched for answers, the family discovered that an AI chatbot had gone from providing homework help to encouraging Adam's suicide.
Tragically, the Raines are not alone. A growing number of children and teens are turning to AI chatbots for emotional support or life advice, only to be pulled into a dark world of self-harm, violence and suicide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth ages 10-24. This crisis is escalating, as many young people facing peer pressure, confusion, loneliness and mental health concerns are seeking solace in AI companions that promise judgment-free attention and validation. In fact, a recent survey found that 72 percent of teens have used AI chatbots.
Experts warn that for kids who are still developing social skills, these AI interactions can reinforce and amplify negative thoughts or actions. Tech companies must do more to implement appropriate safeguards and prevent their chatbots from engaging in abusive or manipulative conversations with vulnerable youth. Prevention efforts need to start now, equipping children, families, schools and communities with the tools to stay safe through digital literacy, awareness campaigns and supportive environments.
