AI Chatbots Aid Doctor Visits: Faster Diagnoses?
9 Oct
Summary
- AI chatbot diagnosed accurately in over half of patient cases.
- AI helped doctors prepare for patient visits 75% of the time.
- Patient attitudes towards AI in primary care improved post-interaction.

Artificial intelligence chatbots show potential in assisting primary care by identifying patient diagnoses up to five days before scheduled GP appointments. A recent study involving 98 patients in Boston examined online conversations with an AI chatbot, which provided potential diagnoses and next steps for discussion.
Doctors monitored these interactions and received transcripts, finding the AI's suggested diagnoses aligned with confirmed diagnoses in over half of the cases. The accuracy increased to 75% when considering the chatbot's top three suggestions. Crucially, no conversations triggered safety stops, and patient attitudes toward AI in healthcare showed improvement.
Medical professionals reported that the AI chatbot assisted them in preparing for patient visits in 75% of cases and influenced their treatment approach in over half. Despite these promising findings, researchers stressed that the evidence does not yet support the autonomous use of AI for diagnosis, triage, or management.
Further research is necessary to evaluate diagnostic safety, patient-clinician communication, doctor workloads, costs, and the required level of oversight. Experts emphasize that AI should support, not replace, the clinical judgment and patient relationships that GPs provide, urging for larger studies and appropriate regulation before integration into national healthcare systems.
