AI Joins Ambulance Crew: A New Era for Paramedics
13 Oct
Summary
- Paramedics are testing AI that records patient conversations.
- The technology aims to reduce staff workload and improve accuracy.
- An eight-week trial will determine the AI tool's future use.
Ambulance services are piloting advanced AI technology designed to assist frontline staff. North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) is currently conducting an eight-week trial involving 38 participants, from paramedics to operational staff, to evaluate the effectiveness of AI that records, transcribes, and summarizes patient interactions.
This emerging technology utilizes the iPad microphones already carried by ambulance crews. Its potential benefits include improving the consistency and accuracy of patient records, while also aiming to reduce the workload of healthcare professionals. Georgina Campbell, the digital clinical lead at NEAS, emphasized that the trial will help the team understand how to implement such technology safely and effectively, upholding high standards of care.
The organization will make a decision regarding the AI tool's ongoing use after the trial period finishes in November. All notes generated by the AI are subject to review and editing by a clinician before being incorporated into a patient's official record.
