Ahmedabad Kitchens Go Digital: Diners Still in the Dark
11 Oct
Summary
- Ahmedabad restaurants installed kitchen CCTV cameras following AMC hygiene advisory.
- Business owners declined customer access to live kitchen feeds for safety concerns.
- Hygiene complaints decreased after advisory, improving transparency and trust.

In Ahmedabad, numerous restaurants have recently equipped their kitchens with CCTV cameras, a move prompted by an August advisory from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) aimed at enhancing hygiene standards. This initiative saw over 4,000 food establishments install cameras.
Despite the installation, restaurant owners have opted not to provide customers with live feeds of their kitchens. Concerns regarding safety reservations and operational issues were cited by the Ahmedabad Hotel Owners' Association. However, authorities consider the overall compliance encouraging.
As an alternative to live broadcasts, many establishments now offer visible kitchen access through windows or glass partitions, allowing customers to observe food preparation. This increased transparency has reportedly led to a decline in public hygiene complaints.
The intensified food safety efforts across Gujarat followed numerous food poisoning incidents. The AMC has also taken actions such as sealing eateries and canteens found to have compromised food quality.
