Agency Lake Toxic Algae Bloom Prompts Health Advisory

A health advisory has been issued for Agency Lake in Klamath County due to a toxic algae bloom, as reported by the Oregon Health Authority. This advisory follows an earlier health precaution placed on May 21. The current advisory is due to cyanotoxins in the water surpassing recreational use levels.

Officials emphasize that while toxins do not penetrate the skin, ingesting or inhaling contaminated water poses significant health risks. Exposure can lead to symptoms similar to food poisoning, including stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. More severe effects can include numbness, tingling, dizziness, and shortness of breath. Children and pets are particularly vulnerable due to their size and tendency to swallow water, with potential for severe illness or even death in animals.

The lake remains open for activities like fishing, camping, hiking, and biking. Boating is considered safe as long as excessive water spray, which could be inhaled, is avoided. However, drinking water directly from the lake is extremely dangerous, as boiling or filtering does not remove the toxins. Campers are advised to seek alternative water sources.

An advisory is also in effect for fish caught in the affected areas. While consumption is not recommended, if individuals choose to eat fish, toxins are likely to build up in fat, skin, and organs. These areas should be removed before cooking or freezing, and fillets should be rinsed with clean water.
