The Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) has entered into a significant research and development collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed on February 5, 2026, to advance various aspects of combat medicine.
This partnership is a core pillar of the AFMS's long-term vision for 'Future-Ready' strategies, building on existing collaborations with premier institutions like IITs and ICMR. The focus will be on developing technologies for the healthcare needs of soldiers in remote locations, including wearable devices for continuous health monitoring and remote interventions.
These innovations are expected to benefit not only field operations but also find extensive applications within hospitals and civilian healthcare settings. A key component of this initiative is a joint PhD program, allowing AFMS clinicians to conduct research at IISc, thereby translating clinical needs into practical solutions.
ARMEDiCON-2026, a significant professional platform for AFMS, also highlighted the importance of operational preparedness, clinical excellence, and research. Discussions included insights from military medical support in contemporary conflicts and advancements in bio-surveillance and diagnostic capabilities, such as new BSL-2 and viral cell culture laboratories at AFMC.
