Food safety officials seized nearly one tonne of adulterated jaggery from the Vellore wholesale market just before the Pongal festival. The raid targeted shops and warehouses known for jaggery sales during peak seasons, uncovering products mixed with harmful substances like kesari synthetic powder and wheat flour.
This inspection, prompted by consumer complaints, highlighted the risks associated with adulterated jaggery, which can be made to appear more appealing and heavier. Health authorities emphasized that such practices pose significant health hazards, including digestive problems and a potential increase in cancer risk.
The seized samples have been sent for laboratory analysis, and legal action will be pursued against traders found in violation of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) norms. Officials are also creating awareness among dealers about the dangers of adulteration.
