Gujarat's Food Safety Department recently confiscated more than 3,500 kg of fennel seeds suspected of adulteration. The raid also uncovered approximately 140 kg of a chemical substance used in the contamination. Samples are undergoing laboratory testing to confirm the nature of the adulterants.
Dr. Aniket Mule, an Internal Medicine Consultant, warned that chemically colored fennel seeds can lead to severe health issues, even with small amounts. Immediate symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps. Long-term consumption of such dyes can stress the liver and kidneys, potentially causing chronic inflammation and impaired organ function.
Consumers should be vigilant for unnaturally bright or glossy fennel seeds, which may indicate artificial coloring. A simple test involves rubbing seeds or placing them on wet paper; color transfer is suspicious. A strong chemical smell instead of the natural sweet aroma is also a red flag. It is recommended to purchase only sealed products with proper labeling, avoiding loose items from unverified sources or those priced suspiciously low.
