New Health Hub Replaces Closed Accrington Hospital
11 Aug
Summary
- Derelict Accrington Victoria Hospital will be demolished.
- A new health and care hub will be built on the site.
- The hub will focus on elderly and chronically ill patients.

The derelict Accrington Victoria Hospital is set for demolition following the approval of new development plans. This Victorian-era facility, located on Haywood Road, was closed in December 2024 because it was deemed unsafe for patients and staff. Issues such as a collapsing ceiling, malfunctioning boilers, and the presence of asbestos contributed to its closure.
East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust has collaborated with local authorities, patient advocacy groups, and MP Sarah Smith to chart a new course for the hospital's site. Plans revealed in March outline the transformation of the former hospital grounds into a vital community hub. The new development will specifically cater to the needs of the elderly population and those living with chronic illnesses, providing essential health and care services.
