In an effort to extend healthcare to underserved populations, Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dinesh Gundu Rao has launched nine mobile health units (MHUs) across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. These units are specifically designed to reach people residing in inaccessible, forest, and hilly areas.
Each MHU is equipped with a dedicated medical team comprising an MBBS doctor, a nurse, and a laboratory technician. They will provide essential services such as outpatient consultations, rapid diagnostic tests, free medicines, and referral services. The initiative also aims to support the implementation of national and state health programs in these remote locations.
The mobile units are set to operate with a structured plan, visiting two to three villages daily on fixed schedules with prior resident notification. The operational cost for each unit is ₹1.92 lakh per month, ensuring sustained healthcare delivery to communities previously on the fringes of the formal health system.
