The Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) in Tiruchi has successfully performed its 50th kidney transplantation surgery. The 50th transplantation was recently completed, utilizing a kidney donated from a brain-dead individual. This organ was sourced from the Government Rajaji Medical College and Hospital in Madurai, following all established transplant regulations. The recipient, a 54-year-old patient from Perambalur district, had been undergoing dialysis at MGMGH for four years.
All 50 kidney transplant surgeries conducted at the hospital have been performed entirely free of cost to the patients. This was made possible through the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. Among the 50 procedures, 14 involved kidneys from living related donors, while the remaining 36 received organs from brain-dead donors.
