A five-year-old boy, Jude Platts of Liverpool, passed away on New Year's Eve 2025, less than 24 hours after being diagnosed with streptococcal pneumonia meningitis. Jude, who was born with a rare chromosome disorder and autism, overcame numerous challenges throughout his young life. His family remembers him for his determined spirit and cheerful personality.
Jude initially showed symptoms of vomiting, which his family mistook for a stomach bug. His condition worsened rapidly, leading to a seizure and paralysis, prompting an ambulance call. At the hospital, he experienced respiratory failure and was placed in a medically induced coma.
Scans revealed inflammation of the brain due to infection, and later confirmed pneumococcal meningitis. Doctors stated the infection affected his brain with unprecedented speed and aggression. Despite intensive treatment, Jude had no brain activity, leading his family to make the difficult decision to turn off life support.
The Platts family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to fund a custom memorial for Jude, aiming to create a unique and lasting tribute to their beloved son and brother.
