Surgeons at SMS Medical College and Hospital in Jaipur have successfully removed a colossal 28.6kg retroperitoneal sarcoma, a rare type of tumor, from a 59-year-old woman. The three-hour operation was highly complex due to the tumor's deep abdominal location, nestled in the retroperitoneal space where such growths are uncommon and often grow to immense sizes before detection.
The tumor was intricately attached to multiple vital organs, including the intestines and urinary bladder, and was situated perilously close to the liver and pancreas. A critical challenge involved carefully dissecting and preserving the ureter, which was found positioned in front of the mass. The surgical team's expertise ensured the removal of the tumor while safeguarding surrounding organs and essential structures.
Giant retroperitoneal sarcomas exceeding 20kg are exceptionally rare, with only about 20 such cases documented globally in medical literature. Following the procedure, the patient was transferred to the ICU, where her condition remained stable. She has since been moved to a ward for ongoing care. Notably, this life-saving surgery was performed free of charge under the Rajasthan Govt Health Scheme.
