A groundbreaking technique developed by doctors at PGI, Chandigarh, now allows for the fitting of customized artificial eyes in children within 24 hours of surgical removal. This development offers much faster rehabilitation for young patients diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a serious childhood eye cancer.
Traditionally, fitting prosthetic eyes for infants and toddlers has been a challenging, time-consuming process. The new Examination Under Anaesthesia (EUA)-based protocol enables doctors to take socket impressions during the same treatment session while the child is anesthetized. This significantly cuts down the fabrication and fitting time.
The research involved five young children who underwent enucleation surgery. The customized prosthetic eyes were designed to perfectly match the color, size, and facial profile of the remaining natural eye, ensuring optimal cosmetic results and facial symmetry.
This innovative approach is expected to substantially reduce the emotional and logistical burden on families dealing with childhood cancer. Faster prosthetic rehabilitation can positively impact a child's psychological and social development by restoring a near-normal appearance swiftly.
