Doctors at Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH) in Pimpri-Chinchwad have successfully removed a 20.1-kilogram malignant ovarian tumor. The complex, five-hour surgery was performed free of charge for a 60-year-old woman from the Ahilyanagar district.
She had noticed abdominal swelling six months prior, and by the time of her admission on June 20, 2026, the tumor measured approximately 50x30x20 cm, significantly impairing her ability to walk, eat, and breathe. Doctors first stabilized her condition with nutritional support and blood correction before proceeding with the surgery on June 24, 2026.
The multidisciplinary surgical team, led by Dr. Santosh Thorat, successfully removed the large tumor along with necessary lymph nodes. Histopathology confirmed it as bilateral mucinous cystadenocarcinoma, a rare form of ovarian cancer. Such bilateral malignant tumors of this magnitude are uncommon.
The patient is recovering well after spending two days in the intensive care unit and is expected to be discharged soon. The successful procedure was conducted under the Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana.
