14 Oct
Summary
- Sixteen fake doctors were arrested in Surat for treating patients without qualifications.
- Some accused had studied only up to Class 10 or 12 and practiced for decades.
- The clinics were found in deplorable condition, serving a large migrant worker population.

In Surat, a joint operation by the Special Operations Group (SOG) and the district health department led to the arrest of sixteen individuals for practicing medicine without qualifications. These accused allegedly operated clinics in the Pandesara industrial area, treating patients with allopathic medicines, injections, and drips. Some of the individuals had only completed Class 10 or 12, with one person reportedly practicing for 33 years despite lacking formal medical training.
The raided clinics were described as being in deplorable conditions. The operation was initiated after the SOG received information about unqualified practitioners. Dummy patients were used to verify the allegations before simultaneous raids were conducted. Many of the arrested accused hailed from states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal and had previously worked as compounders or helpers.
Among the arrested were repeat offenders, including one who had been caught in 2002 for similar activities. The case underscores the issue of unqualified individuals providing medical services, particularly in industrial areas like Pandesara, which has a large population of migrant workers. Authorities are addressing the practice of unlicensed medical treatment to ensure public safety.
