Summary
- Thirteen people died from suspected milk adulteration in East Godavari district.
- Affected residents experienced anuria, vomiting, and acute renal dysfunction.
- Varalakshmi Milk Dairy in Narasapuram village supplied the suspected milk.

A cluster of severe illnesses, initially detected on February 22, has led to a tragic death toll of 13 in East Godavari district, with seven individuals still undergoing treatment. Residents from Lalacheruvu's Chowdeswaranagar and Swaroopanagar areas reportedly fell ill after consuming milk suspected of being adulterated. Medical examinations revealed symptoms such as anuria, vomiting, abdominal pain, and acute renal dysfunction requiring dialysis, along with elevated blood urea and serum creatinine levels.
Preliminary investigations have identified Varalakshmi Milk Dairy in Narasapuram village as the source of the suspected contaminated milk, which was supplied to about 106 families. The supply has since been immediately halted. A multi-departmental response is underway, including emergency medical camps, Rapid Response Teams, and sample collections by the Food Safety Department from the dairy.
The suspected milk vendor has been taken into custody, and the dairy unit has been sealed pending thorough analysis of milk, paneer, ghee, water, and vinegar samples. Blood and urine samples from affected individuals are also undergoing detailed toxicological examination. The Animal Husbandry Department is also conducting its own analysis of milk, cattle feed, and water samples. Police have registered a case and are investigating the distribution network and the full extent of affected consumers.
