A remarkable surgical intervention took place at Ernakulam General Hospital, where a 10cm pencil was extracted from the urinary bladder of a 32-year-old woman. The patient, who has learning disabilities, had been experiencing severe lower abdominal pain, blood in her urine, and recurrent urinary tract infections for the past three months.
An endoscopic examination revealed the foreign object lodged within her bladder, prompting immediate surgical intervention. The urology department, under the leadership of Dr. Anoop Krishnan, successfully removed the pencil. The surgical team included anesthesiologists Dr. Anjuraj and Dr. Anjana K E, along with other medical staff.
Hospital superintendent Dr. Satheesh K N highlighted the hospital's robust urology services, noting that approximately 50,000 patients have received care, including complex surgeries. He emphasized that nearly 90% of these treatments are provided free of charge through government health insurance and Karunya assistance schemes.
