Mathieu Chatelain undertook a challenging 100-kilometre ultra marathon on Saturday, striving to generate $100,000 for The Ottawa Hospital Foundation. This significant endeavor was fueled by profound gratitude for the hospital's care, which saved his father's life when Chatelain was just eight years old. He expressed a powerful desire to help other families by ensuring a parent's presence.
The Ottawa Hospital Foundation is actively engaged in its Campaign to Create Tomorrow, a monumental effort to raise $500 million for a new hospital campus. This project is noted as the largest healthcare infrastructure initiative in the region's history, slated to feature the area's most extensive adult trauma centre and a new mental health department.
Chatelain's inspiration intensified after a reunion with Dr. David Schramm, the neurosurgeon who operated on his father over 30 years ago. This encounter solidified his mission to replicate the life-changing impact the hospital had on his own childhood memories. His father, Pierre Chatelain, shared immense pride in his son's ambitious challenge and the funds raised.
Despite a previous knee injury during training, Chatelain committed to raising funds, having already run 1,200 km since January 1st, even in adverse winter conditions. He had previously supported the foundation by running a half marathon in 2018. The Ottawa Hospital has currently amassed over $400 million toward its $500 million target.
