A 10-year-old boy named Caelan, living with the rare genetic kidney disease Dent's disease, took part in an 8km fundraising walk on Saturday. He was supported by his family and friends at Ferry Meadows for Kidney Research UK's event.
Caelan was diagnosed with the inherited condition two years ago. While there is no cure, his family aims to slow its progression and protect his kidney function. The walk was an emotional experience for his mother, Sammy, who expressed hope that research will improve futures.
Family and friends raised about £900 for the Peterborough-based charity. Earlier this year, Caelan also organized a non-uniform day and created a poster about kidney disease at school, raising hundreds of pounds. His uncles also have Dent's disease and required kidney transplants in their late 30s.
Caelan shared his anxieties about hospital visits and the future, noting that seeing his uncles' struggles has been difficult. He hopes to protect his kidneys to continue playing football, though he experiences increased fatigue. An estimated 90,000 people in the Peterborough and Cambridgeshire area live with kidney disease.
