In March 2020, a remarkable journey by a herd of Asian elephants through northern Yunnan province concluded with their settlement in the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve. This herd, now numbering 22 with the recent arrival of two calves, has made the reserve their comfortable home ever since.
Beyond this well-known family, the region hosts two other significant elephant herds, the Ranran and Dalubao families, each boasting around 30 members. These elephants engage in natural behaviors, foraging, cooling off in water, and socializing.
Overall, Xishuangbanna is now home to over 300 elephants. To further safeguard these animals and other terrestrial wildlife, revised provincial regulations are scheduled to be implemented on August 15, enhancing protection measures in the area.
