Siyona Munjal, Captain of the Young Earth Heroes (YEH) Community, recently spearheaded a significant event at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi. She guided students from across Delhi NCR in a direct dialogue with leading consumer brands, focusing on sustainability and responsible consumption. This fourth YEH Community Meetup fostered discussions on climate responsibility and everyday environmental choices.
A key segment, 'Pooch Ke Toh Dekho,' allowed young participants to question representatives from Hyundai Motor India, Bisleri, and Tetra Pak India. The students inquired about crucial issues such as carbon emissions, product life cycles, plastic waste, recycling, and corporate accountability. This dialogue aimed to deepen understanding of the environmental impact of consumed products.
Munjal, who is currently studying at Marlborough College in the UK, emphasized the importance of informed questioning. She highlighted her own sustainability journey, which includes practical community work like supporting waste-pickers through the Magic Mitti initiative. YEH, under her leadership, has engaged over 1,200 students through various environmental programs and initiatives.
The YEH community has also contributed to climate resilience efforts, assisting the Government of Delhi's Heat Action Plan by distributing essential items like cotton gamchas and ORS sachets to vulnerable outdoor workers. Munjal believes that increased access to resources necessitates greater responsibility in examining personal consumption habits and environmental impact.
CauseBecause, the conceptualizer of Young Earth Heroes, stated that the initiative aims to create a platform for youth to take ownership of sustainability conversations. YEH's activities, including school engagements and community meetups, encourage young people to critically examine their consumption patterns and interact constructively with businesses and institutions.
