8 Feb
Summary
- Overwhelming public support for Yorkshire Wolds AONB designation.
- 85% of surveyed people backed coastal area status.
- Designation offers stronger legal protection for development.

The Yorkshire Wolds are advancing towards official designation as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), buoyed by significant public endorsement. Recent surveys conducted by Natural England revealed that 85% of respondents supported AONB status for the coastal stretch, while 78% backed the designation for the inland areas.
This proposed AONB would encompass roughly 180 square miles, covering the north and west slopes of the Wolds, the foothills south of Malton, and valleys in the High Wolds. The coastal section extends around Flamborough Head.
